As a result of generous funding from the Law Foundation of Alberta, and in partnership with the Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta, Know Your Rights is now available in Alberta.
Through the creation of plain language legal information resources, CNIB’s Know Your Rights -Alberta project empowers people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision, to better understand their legal rights, navigate the legal system, and self-advocate to challenge discrimination.
The first available resource is a set of eight legal information handbooks, each of which set out the legal rights of people who are blind, Deafblind, or have low vision within the following categories of daily life:
- Built Environment
- Education
- Employment
- Government and Consumer Services
- Healthcare
- Housing
- Transportation
- Self-Advocacy and Essential Legal Information
A ninth handbook is also available, which focuses exclusively on legal resources and essential non-legal resources available in Alberta, so that Albertans can learn where to go to get legal help. All handbooks can be downloaded for free in accessible Word document and PDF formats.
The second resource available is a set of three public legal education videos, each depicting a person who is blind or low vision encountering barriers in public life, and how these barriers can be challenged.
