When Bev Dean and her husband moved to Mactier in 2016, she knew she wanted to stay active and give back to the community, but she didn’t know where. That all changed when her husband spotted a brochure about CNIB Lake Joe at Canada Post.
“My husband brought it home and said, ‘This is right up your alley,” said Bev.
With a background in pediatric nursing, volunteering during the summer months felt like a natural next step. What Bev didn’t expect was just how much the experience would offer in return.
“I initially thought it was a kids-only camp,” she said. “I had no idea what it was all about. I was blown away by everything. It was such a pleasant surprise.”
For the past three years, Bev has been a dedicated “day” volunteer, contributing a few hours each week. Her typical shift runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., often spent in the rec hall helping with activities like pottery: handing out clay, offering guidance, and sharing in the creative process. She also lends a hand in the dining hall, setting tables, serving meals, and sitting down to connect with campers.
“The day just flies by,” she adds.
Bev says one of the things she values most about volunteering is the chance to meet and connect with people of all ages throughout the camp season.
“The repeat campers are so heartwarming. Sometimes they’ll give me crafts they’ve made. I don’t know who gets more out of it, me or the campers,” said Bev.
For anyone nearby who’s considering volunteering but isn’t sure they can commit the time, Bev is quick to put those concerns to rest. “This is the best job I’ve ever had – and I don’t even get paid for it,” she said. “Three hours a week is nothing for such an incredibly rewarding experience. Just give it a try. it might open up a whole new world for you.”
Now in her 70s, she’s also quick to remind others that volunteering has no age limit. it’s never too late to get involved and make a difference.
And of those who do take the leap, be prepared to try a few new things. Bev has already taken on archery, climbed the tower, and paddled a kayak, proof that at Lake Joe, there’s something for everyone!
