When Frances Snyder used to drive past CNIB Lake Joe on her way to her cottage, she often wondered what happened behind the camp gates. Today, she’s part of the magic that makes camp so special.
Now volunteering for her third summer at Lake Joe, Frances first felt drawn to the camp after retiring from a long career in the dental field. She had always wanted to give back in a meaningful way and was looking for a volunteer opportunity close to home.
“I’ve always had an open heart for people who might need a little extra support,” said Frances. “Growing up, I had a brother who was deaf, so this community has
always been close to my heart.”
Lake Joe felt like a natural fit.
“I was driving by all the time and thought, this is the perfect place,” said Frances. It combines being outdoors, helping people, and creating a place where everyone can enjoy themselves and feel included.”
Frances volunteers in three-hour day shifts, a flexible option designed especially for people who live nearby. The schedule allows her to stay involved without committing to a full week at camp.
During her shifts, Frances describes herself as a “floater,” jumping in wherever she’s needed. She might help set up a craft activity, organize a game, assist staff behind the scenes, or simply spend time connecting with campers.
“No two shifts are the same,” she said. “Sometimes you’re helping with activities, and sometimes you’re just being present and sharing a moment with someone.”
For Frances, those moments are what make volunteering so meaningful. One experience that stands out for her is watching a camper try waterskiing for the very first time.
“They were nervous at the beginning, but when they finally did it, the look of pride on their face was unforgettable,” she recalls. “It makes you realize that in life, you really can do anything if you want to.”
That sense of joy and possibility is what keeps her coming back.
“The energy here is contagious,” she said. “Even after a short shift, I leave feeling inspired and uplifted.”
Her advice for others who live nearby and might be considering volunteering? “Don’t underestimate the impact of a few hours,” said Frances. “You don’t have to have special expertise. Just showing up with a positive attitude can make a real difference. It’s flexible, it’s rewarding, and it’s honestly a lot of fun.”
