Position Description

The CNIB Guide Dog Memorial Garden honours the memories of beloved CNIB program dogs and the deep bonds they shared with their handlers. We are seeking dedicated volunteers to assist with the care, upkeep, and enhancement of the CNIB Guide Dogs Memorial Garden to ensure it remains a respectful, welcoming, and accessible space for graduates, families, staff, and visitors.

Qualities, Skills and Training
  • Interest in gardening, landscaping, or outdoor maintenance (formal experience not required)
  • Appreciation for the mission of CNIB Guide Dogs and the significance of the Memorial Garden
  • Minimum 14 years of age with an adult supervisor
  • Comfortable working outdoors and performing light to moderate physical tasks
  • Reliable, respectful, and able to work independently or as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow guidance
  • Ability to travel to the CNIB Canine Campus in Carleton Place
Responsibilities & Tasks:
  • Assist with seasonal garden maintenance, including planting, weeding, pruning, watering, mulching, and general upkeep
  • Support special projects such as garden clean up days, memorial events, or enhancement initiatives
  • Help maintain the overall appearance, safety, and accessibility of the garden pathways and seating areas
  • Work collaboratively with CNIB Guide Dogs staff, volunteers, and committee members to ensure the garden reflects its memorial purpose
  • Use provided tools and follow guidance to complete tasks safely and respectfully
Boundaries:
  • The Memorial Garden is a place of remembrance; volunteers are expected to treat the space with respect at all times
  • Photos or stories related to the Memorial Garden or the CNIB Guide Dogs Canine Campus should not be shared publicly without prior approval from CNIB Guide Dogs
Commitment:
  • Volunteer shifts will be scheduled based on seasonal and project needs (typically spring through fall). 
  • Volunteers must agree to abide by CNIB’s Volunteer Code of Conduct, including policies related to confidentiality, conflict of interest, and respectful workplace behaviour
Preliminary Screening:
  • Volunteer application form
  • Orientation session
  • Interview
  • Character references
  • Police record check
Supervision and Ongoing Support:

CNIB Guide Dogs staff and/or designated committee members will be available to provide guidance, direction, and ongoing support as needed
