If you are an aspiring young artist Toronto Hub Art Saturdays will be a fun way to learn some art skills and hang out with CNIB friends. CNIB staff and volunteers will be on site to supervise the shared space from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for the most part participants are invited to work independently. There will be two one-hour sessions during the day where you can receive instruction and feedback from an adult artist. The rest of your time can be devoted to working on the project of your choice and connecting with other young artists.
The instruction by request sessions are as follows:
- 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Professional cartoonist Doug Knight will be available in the second floor CNIB Board Room to work one on one with children and youth interested in cartooning or drawing. Doug is a CNIB member who experiences low vision and has many tips and tricks to work with your usable vision. This session uses traditional drawing media.
- 1-2 p.m.: CNIB staff member Walter Dickinson offers support in working with clay for three-dimensional projects.
Participants are encouraged to bring their ideas and work collaboratively with adult staff and volunteers to realize them. Currently we are focused on clay and two-dimensional drawing materials, but if you had other media you would like to try, we will find someone to guide you.
As a special incentive participants will be sharing space with the blind and partially sighted artists that comprise Hands of Fire. These are a group of artists that meet at our Toronto Hub and who create three-dimensional sculpture in clay. Child and youth participants have the chance to observe these adult artists and learn about their work when opportunity allows. For participants that are attending over the 12pm to 1pm period, a light lunch (usually pizza) will be provided.
All materials are free for participants and your only commitment need be to join in and have fun! Please note space is limited, so be sure to sign up in advance for each Saturday you wish to attend.
Attendees will meet in person on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. at the CNIB GTA Community Hub (1525 Yonge Street, Toronto).
