Bayer Canada Inc. commits to eye health in rural and remote communities in Northern Ontario

CNIB and Vision Loss Rehabilitation Ontario are pleased to recognize support from Bayer Canada Inc. to develop an Indigenous health strategy for its vision rehabilitation services. This funding will reduce systemic barriers and disparity in vision care experienced by Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario and ensure vision rehab services are culturally appropriate.
This commitment follows Bayer’s support of the 2021 Eye Van Tour, which wrapped up in early November. During that tour, patients in rural and remote communities in Northern Ontario received vision screening, treatment of eye conditions, minor eye surgery, medical advice, and information about eye health.
The Eye Van has been providing ophthalmology treatment and care to patients for 49 years. The medical outreach program resumed its annual tour in August 2021, following an extended postponement of services because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Held every September, Guide Dog Access Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness and understanding of guide dogs, the rights of guide dog handlers, and to champion equal access for guide dog teams.
While guide dog refusals happen in many settings, transportation remains one of the most common areas where handlers encounter barriers and discrimination. That’s why, in support of our commitment to safe and accessible journeys, our advocacy campaign this year is focused on guide dog access in transportation.
It’s not uncommon for vision loss to occur as we age, but for some, its onset can be sudden and unexpected. That was the experience for one woman from Victoria, Madison Sutcliffe, who suddenly lost about 90% of her vision during pregnancy. Looking for support and community, she reached out to CNIB and joined the Come to Work program
To strengthen our voices and support the professional development of our Ontario advocates, ambassadors and CNIB staff, we’ve launched Educate to Advocate – an advocacy program designed to drive achievement and equality through education.

CNIB recently unveiled the brand-new Barrie Community Hub and Nanji Family Foundation CNIB SmartLife Centre, thanks to a generous donations made by the Nanji Family Foundation and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The new Hub, which is now open to members of the public, is an inclusive community space designed to empower people impacted by blindness to live the lives they choose.
