Meet Zachary: A Young Leader with a Passion for Change

When 17-year-old Zachary stepped onto the grounds of CNIB Lake Joe two years ago, he had no idea it would shape the course of his high school journey and inspire a philanthropic mission that would raise more than $6,000 to support the camp.

A longtime camper at Camp Manitou, Zachary was introduced to CNIB through its Leaders in Training (LIT) program, where he met Lake Joe campers and staff members. But it was a conversation with a staff member who shared his story of losing his sight as a teenager that resonated with him.Zachary Levin smiles as he stands in front of the Lake Joe waterfront.

“It really changed my perspective,” Zachary says. “I realized how much we take our vision for granted and how important it is to appreciate and protect it.”

Determined to give back to CNIB Lake Joe and raise awareness in his community, Zachary began working with our philanthropy team last fall to develop a multi-faceted campaign at his school.

What began as a simple donations page quickly grew into something much more:

  • a Grub Day, where students donated to wear casual clothes
  • a raffle featuring prizes like Blue Jays tickets and CNIB items
  • interactive experiences simulating visual impairments using glasses and blindfolds during lunch hour
  • snack sales during the school play

Zachary didn’t stop at raising funds. With help from the Junior Business Club at his school, he also began laying the groundwork for the initiative to continue even after he graduates.

“I don’t want this to be a one-and-done,” he says. “I want it to grow year after year, student after student.”

His efforts have caught the attention of CNIB Lake Joe staff. Not just for the amount raised, but for the heart, initiative, and leadership he’s shown.

“He’s a changemaker,” says Eugene Chong, General Manager of CNIB Lake Joe. “He’s not only supporting our work. He’s helping shape the next generation’s understanding of vision loss.”

Zachary’s advice to other young changemakers? “Just take the first step. Even if it’s something small. Send the email, make the call. Believe that you can create change, because you absolutely can.”

Zachary is now entering Grade 12, planning for university, and continuing to explore his passions for business, community building, and youth leadership. He hopes to continue supporting CNIB Lake Joe and one day scale his initiative to other schools and camps.
