The Chambre des notaires du Québec contributes to CNIB’s mission

The CNIB Foundation received generous financial support in the amount of $128,150 from the Fonds d’études notariales de la Chambre des notaires du Québec. This money will be invested in the CNIB Foundation’s Advocacy program and will certainly help change what it means to be blind in today’s society.

Among other things, it will make it possible to adapt Know Your Rights, a project based on the accessibility of rights and legal remedies for people living with a visual disability that was created in Ontario. This project will be adapted to Québec law to better equip the province’s blind citizens. More details on this large-scale project are to come in the next few months, so stay tuned!

A devoted team

The generous donation from the Chambre des notaires has also made it possible to hire Catheryne Houde as Head of Advocacy, French-language programs.

“For me, advocacy is the pillar of a fair and just society. Indeed, although all our other services are important, if blind people are not accepted in society and treated fairly, they will not be able to work and they will not be able to use technology, because companies will not make accessible technology if they do not consider blind people as forming part of society.”

For the past several months, she has been working with a committee of established legal professionals and law students to better identify rights that are being violated and to help Quebeckers living with a visual disability become more aware of their rights. The team has recently expanded to include a communications specialist, Laurence Durocher, who joined the team to help spread the word about CNIB’s advocacy initiatives.

Many thanks!

The CNIB Foundation is very grateful for the financial support provided by the Fonds d’études notariales of the Chambre des notaires du Québec. CNIB is committed to advancing the cause of blind people in terms of advocacy. There are still many barriers to be broken down, and this support is the start of a wind of change as far as the knowledge of the rights of blind people is concerned. We look forward to providing more details on what is to come. Stay tuned and full details will be disclosed shortly!
