Career change pet dogs available for adoption: Meet Cosmo

Cosmo, a black Labrador Retriever, sits attentively on a sunny green lawn, looking directly at the camera with an alert and focused expression.

Dog Summary

Name: Cosmo
Location: Carleton Place, ON
Age: 20 months
Breed: Labrador Retriever (Black)
Sex: Male, Neutered
Home behaviour: Cosmo is settling well into a home environment and currently lives successfully with another dog. He can be enthusiastic when greeting people and may jump up when excited, so continued training and management in the home will be important. He has also shown some curiosity with household items and will benefit from supervision and appropriate enrichment to help prevent unwanted chewing or ingestion of non-food items. With maturity and consistency these behaviours have subsided.
Good with dogs: Potentially, with appropriate introductions and management. Cosmo can become very excited around other dogs and would benefit from continued work on his social skills.
Good with cats: Unknown
Good with kids: Older, dog-savvy children recommended due to his tendency to jump up when excited.
Adoption fee: $1500

About Cosmo

Cosmo is an incredibly bright, affectionate, and sensitive boy who loves being close to his people. He has a sweet nature and forms strong bonds with those he trusts.

While he has many wonderful qualities, Cosmo ultimately decided that guide dog work was not the career path for him. He prefers a more relaxed lifestyle and can struggle to stay motivated and focused in demanding working environments.

Cosmo is a thoughtful dog who sometimes needs extra time to settle into new situations. Once comfortable, he shows his loving personality and enjoys spending time with his family.

A good fit for me is…

  • A home that can provide structure, consistency, and ongoing positive reinforcement training.
  • Cosmo would thrive with adopters who understand that sensitive dogs sometimes need a little extra patience and support as they build confidence.
  • His ideal family will be committed to continuing work on polite greetings, impulse control, and safe household habits.
  • A home with older children or adults would likely be the best match.
  • Experience with active, enthusiastic dogs would be an asset.

Training notes

Cosmo has a strong foundation of training and understands many commands and expectations. He responds best to positive, reward-based training and benefits from calm, consistent guidance.

Areas for continued development include:

  • Polite greetings and reducing jumping when excited
  • Building confidence in new or stimulating environments
  • Improving impulse control and emotional regulation around people and dogs
  • Continued supervision and management to prevent ingestion of inappropriate items
  • Ongoing socialization and assessment with other dogs to help him develop appropriate play and interaction skills

With patience, consistency, and a supportive home, Cosmo has the potential to be a wonderful companion for a family looking for a loving and devoted best friend.
