Children with CNIB Buddy Dogs: Dani & George

"George isn’t like any other dog I’ve ever met. He’s built a connection with me that I’ve never had before. He’s always there for me and has made such a difference in my life."

“When I first met my buddy dog George, there was an instant connection. It felt like I had been waiting for him for so long, and I was so happy when I finally got him in October 2019. I didn’t expect how immediate the bond would be. The moment he came in the door I knew he was the right dog for me. George is a sweet and affectionate golden retriever who loves cuddles. He enjoys going on walks and exploring, and he gets along with everyone – other animals included. He can sense whenever something is wrong and will do whatever he can to make you feel better. My family and I first heard about CNIB Buddy Dogs while we were at Blind Beginnings Camp – a summer camp on Hornby Island, British Columbia for children and youth who are blind or partially sighted and their families. I was instantly intrigued. We had three dogs growing up, but after we lost them, I wanted a companion. I lost that connection. I want a guide dog, but I’m not old enough yet to get one, and I want to feel more comfortable before I get one. George isn’t like any other dog I’ve ever met. He’s built a connection with me that I’ve never had before. He’s always there for me and has made such a difference in my life. He is friendly, cooperative and great to talk to. We like to go for walks and play fetch together – ooh, and we love to cuddle. Everyone that meets George loves him – my friends and family adore him. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, George. You’ve made such a difference in my life.”

A buddy dog is partnered with a child who is living with sight loss. Whether it’s feeding, grooming or walking this well-trained family pet, this will give the child an opportunity to care for a dog and in some cases, help make it easier to transition into a guide dog partnership in the future. If you think your child could benefit from being partnered with a CNIB Buddy Dog, please contact Miriam Mas, Program Lead, Buddy Dogs & Ambassador Dogs.
