Creating Community with CNIBLakeJoe@Home Virtual Programs

For many CNIB Lake Joe participants, camp never truly ends – it just swaps the campfire for a webcam and the bug spray for a good internet connection!

CNIB Lake Joe offers virtual programs year-round online and by phone. From coffee chats to arts and crafts, trivia sessions and campfire sing-alongs, CNIBLakeJoe@Home virtual programs bring our community together to experience the magic of CNIB Lake Joe from home.

For many participants, CNIBLakeJoe@Home programs have become a lifeline of joy and community from coast to coast. Ben (left) & Taylor together in-person in British Columbia.

For Ben, participating in CNIBLakeJoe@Home programs was a leap of curiosity that became a life-changing experience.

“I went on the CNIB website and thought, ‘Why don’t I take the plunge?’” he recalls. “Ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with these Coffee Breaks and getting to know everyone.”

Ben, who lives in British Columbia and hasn’t yet attended camp in person, said the virtual programs help him feel grounded and part of something bigger.

“If I didn’t know about these programs, I’d be like a ghost,” said Ben. “Through them, I’ve found purpose, friendship, and a sense of belonging. We matter, and that means everything.”

A second family and a weekly routine

For Kyle, CNIBLakeJoe@Home programs quickly became more than a pastime.

“It’s like having coffee with friends every Tuesday,” said Kyle. “We talk about sports, music, and life. You get to laugh, catch up, and feel like you belong.”

Through CNIBLakeJoe@Home programs, Kyle connected with another participant who also lives in Scarborough, Ontario. They meet up to bowl every Saturday and attend Argos games together.

“These programs gave me friendships that exist both online and in person,” he adds.

Joining from Alberta, Shannon wasn't sure if she could be part of Lake Joe’s Ontario-based community, but she was welcomed with open arms.

“At first, I thought, ‘I’m not in Ontario, can I join?’” she laughs. “But everyone made me feel at home right away. It’s like being part of a family.”

Shannon said the inclusive, friendly environment is what keeps her coming back.

“I’ve been in other Zoom groups where things can get tense,” said Shannon. “But here, it’s warm and respectful. Taylor, Sherri, and Stela, our facilitators, keep the conversations light and fun. You never feel left out.”

Ben agrees. “The facilitators are the heart of this place,” he adds. “They’re the wind beneath our wings.”

If you’re looking for connection, laughter, and a sense of belonging, CNIBLakeJoe@Home is where camp spirit lives year-round. Whether you’re a longtime camper or joining for the first time, there’s a virtual seat waiting for you, no computer, internet, or cost required.
