Time Details
- We request a four-month commitment to on-board you as a Volunteer Driver
- You will be contacted as trips are scheduled and given the opportunity to opt in depending on your interest and availability
- Time allocated to volunteering will vary week to week depending on the trips scheduled; you will be notified of up-coming trips as far in advance as possible
Location
- Driving a rental vehicle
- Physical contact with an individual (arm on elbow for sighted guide)
- Staying in hotels
- Waiting for the person you’re driving while they are in meetings
Position Description
Volunteer Drivers assist by driving CNIB staff with sight loss to training sessions and meetings. You will drive a rental vehicle or – occasionally – your own vehicle (you’ll receive mileage). Trips may be for an afternoon or over multiple days (CNIB will pay for your meals and accommodations during trips outside of the HRM).
Qualities, Skills and Training
- Picking up and returning rental vehicles
- Driving CNIB staff with sight loss to training sessions and meetings
- Guiding and providing verbal descriptions as needed
- Assisting with moving demo items and luggage
- Completing paperwork for clients with sight loss
- Submitting mileage
