Come to Work Venture Pool – Business Series

CNIB's Come to Work program and two very passionate volunteer business leaders, are looking to offer a series of seven sessions on taking your start-up and moving through the process to market. The purpose of this form is to assess interest and timing that our community would like to participate in such a series.

Session 1: Basic entrepreneurial beliefs, values, attitudes

  • Who is a successful entrepreneur?
    • Goal and action oriented.
    • A review of motivational, success-oriented quotes.
    • Attitude, perseverance, risk taker, ideas.
  • Do you have what it takes?
    • Skills and attitude survey.
  • How do your beliefs, attitudes compare?
    • Taking stock of your skills inventory.

Session 2: Creating Value for Others

  • It’s not about you!.
  • Success is the reward for meeting the wants and needs of others, well!
  • Ok you think it’s a great idea it, do others?
  • Who is your customer?
  • What is it about the “value” your product or service provides that sets it apart from others?
    • Understanding your competition.
    • Understanding how your customer perceives value from their perspective.
  • What is your value proposition?
    • Defining your Unique Selling Proposition (USP).

Session 3: Keeping Score: Setting Goals, Keeping Score

  • What are your goals?
    • The business plan – write it up!
    • What are the elements of a business plan?
    • Vision and Mission.
  • What is your budget?
    • Elements of a budget- money and projections, cash flow.
    • Capital, Operating, Sales, G&A.
    • People, Skills.
  • What is your marketing plan?
    • Introducing and creating awareness of your product to the market.
    • The 4 P’s - Product, Place, Promotion, Price.
  • How do you gauge success?
    • Counting the numbers and setting the time frame for action.
    • Pricing, Volume, margin.
    • Distribution.

Session 4: Developing your Support Network

  • What is a network?
    • Individuals with whom you have developed a relationship that you can trust and ask for advice.
    • It takes work! Building, Nurturing and Growing.
  • Why is a network important?
    • You don’t know everything, you’ll need help along the way.
  • What are the different types of Networks?
    • You face different challenges that others can help. Developing the depth and breadth of your different networks - personal, motivational, general knowledge, problem solving, and business knowledge - general and specific.
  • Who is in your network?
  • What is a mentor?
    • Do you choose or does the mentor?
  • Finding people who have the skills that complement and supplement yours!
    • How do you develop your network?
    • Who will back you up?
    • Who will support your plan?
    •  Who will mentor you?

Session 5: Financing

  • Money is like a flock of birds, it will follow a leader with a sense of direction and purpose.
    • Generating the confidence of others of your abilities, sense of direction, purpose, and commitment.
  • Where will your financing come from?
    • Personal, friends, investors, grants.
    • The big question?
    • Is there an adequate return for the time, effort and money invested?
  • How long will you have to rely on outside financing before sales match expenses?
    • What is the breakeven point?
    • What does it look like? Positive cash flow?
    • Basic understanding of Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet Concepts.

Session 6: The Big Hunt - Planning and Starting - Pit Falls and Challenges

  • Setting Priorities, timing and gathering resources.
  • What traps are awaiting you?
  • How will you deal with challenges and obstacles that come up?
  • What have others done?

Session 7: Are you ready for Action?

  • Planning without action is a dream.
  • Action without planning is confusion!
  • Is your idea ready for the test?
  • Are you ready for the test?
  • How do you put your idea into practice?
  • What are your next steps?
