Eye Safety at Play

Millions of Canadians, of all ages, participate in some form of physical activity or sport. But often, the last thing players think of on their way to the court, rink or field is eye protection. They may be wearing pads, helmets and various protective guards, but use nothing to protect their eyes, which do not recover from an injury as easily as broken bones, if at all.

In this section you will learn about the activities that leave your eyes most at risk to injury and how to protect yourself to prevent such injury. You’ll also learn about the history of eye safety in Canada’s favourite sport – Hockey – and meet the Ice Owls, a Toronto-area amateur hockey team whose players are almost all living with vision loss. Theirs is a truly inspiring and fascinating story. Finally, we will provide tips on how to choose the right safety eyewear for the activity you want to participate in.
