Diagnosing AMD
There is no cure for AMD, so early diagnosis is key.
There are treatments available, but most of them stabilize vision at
best. With later diagnosis, AMD treatments may be less effective, or
fewer options may be available.
Wet AMD in particular progresses rapidly - sometimes in a matter of
weeks - so prompt diagnosis is critical.
If you are over 50 or have other risk factors for AMD, you need to
be even more proactive about early diagnosis. And if you already
have AMD, you still need to be alert to any further changes.
Your eye care professional can diagnose AMD. It is important to have
regular checkups because you can have AMD without any noticeable
symptoms. You can also play an important role in detecting AMD, by
educating yourself about its signs and symptoms and using an Amsler
grid - a simple test you can do at home.
Remember, if you think something may be wrong, don't hesitate: seek
help immediately. Early diagnosis can literally save your sight!
