Who can join the TD Summer Reading Club through the CNIB Library?
The CNIB Library’s enhanced program for the TD Summer Reading Club is free for kids with print disabilities up to 16 across Canada.
How can I join the club?
If you are already receiving CNIB Library services, either through your public library or through CNIB, you just have to fill out the online form on the Join the Club! page.
There are three ways to sign up for CNIB Library services, depending on your situation:
- If you receive another type of CNIB service but not library service, contact the Library at 1-800-268-8818 or reader.services@cnib.ca. You will need to provide your CNIB number.
- If you are blind or partially sighted and wish to receive services through CNIB, contact CNIB at 1-800-563-2642 or info@cnib.ca. During the registration process you will be asked if you are interested in library services.
- If you have a print disability that is not related to vision (a physical or learning disability), or you are blind or partially sighted but do not wish to receive services through CNIB, ask your local public library to refer you to CNIB Library services through the CNIB Library Partners Program. To do this, your library will need to confirm your eligibility and complete an online referral form. If the program is not available in your area, ask your library to contact us at 1-800-563-2642, ext. 7055 or PartnersProgram@cnib.ca for information about temporary access for the TD Summer Reading Club.
What does it cost to join the TD Summer Reading Club through the CNIB Library?
It’s absolutely FREE for you to join the club and use the books and resources from the CNIB Library.
Why is your program called the TD Summer Reading Club now?
In 2010, the CNIB Library aligned its own summer reading club program theme with the TD Summer Reading Club so that children with print disabilities have the opportunity to read many of the same books in audio and braille and participate in the same activities as their friends at their local public library.
We continue to offer our own enhanced programming that is specially designed to stimulate and inspire children with print disabilities up to the age of 16. Our programming reaches into the homes of families across Canada. Children can participate by web, email or phone, so they don’t need to live near a library or depend on the limits of accessible transportation services to get involved.
Do I have to live in Toronto to join the club?
No! This club is for kids all across Canada!
But if we don’t come into the library, how do we participate?
Book reviews! Book lists! Mystery Questions! Chats! Clan Challenge! You can participate by phone, email, regular mail or fax. If you are six to 14 years old, you can participate online through the Children’s Discovery Portal.
Do I have to read braille to join?
Absolutely not! The club is a great opportunity to practice your braille reading, but lots of the kids who join use our audio books or our online books and resources.
I’m really little. My parents read to me. I don’t read by myself. Can I join the club?
Yes please! In the past some of our club members have been only one or two years old! Their parents read to them at bedtime using our PrintBraille picture books, books from the public library or books of their own! And if, for example, you’re too little to phone in to listen to the Mystery Question, your mom or dad is welcome to phone in for you!
Can you send me large print books?
The CNIB Library doesn’t carry large print books. Check with your local public library to see if they have any large print books. If you use a computer and text enlargement software like ZoomText you can also access lots of online and e-text resources through the CNIB Digital Library (and the Children’s Discovery Portal if you are six to 14 years old). And of course you can also use our DAISY books on CD and online digital audio books.
So what do I get if I join the TD Summer Reading Club through the CNIB Library?
You’ll receive an activity kit in the mail. Every kit contains a guide in large print and audio. If you want uncontracted or contracted braille included in your kit, just ask.
The guide contains information about how to earn points and win prizes. Three DAISY audio books are included in the kit so you can start reading right away. We also send suggested lists of books on the Destination Jungles theme that you might like to order from the library.
This year, each kit includes a Jungle Journal that you can fill out. Be sure to collect stickers to decorate your Jungle Journal by answering the weekly Mystery Questions!
As if that’s not enough, every kit contains a fierce but cuddly plush monkey wearing a teeny tiny t-shirt.
I still need convincing…why should I join the club?
Still not sure if the club is right for you? Okay, here goes…
Even if you don’t do much reading in the summer, have a lot of other stuff going on over the summer, go away for part or all of the summer, or don’t like our Destination Jungle theme, you should still join the club. Why? Because…
- The CNIB Library has lots more than just books. We have described movies and e-magazines, accessible games and moderated chat rooms.
- You can participate in the club as much or as little as you want. It’s totally up to you.
- If you’re going away to camp and want to bring books with you, just let us know! If you’re going to be at another address for part of the summer or for the whole summer, let us know and we can send your books there!
- Remember, you can read absolutely any books you want this summer. You don’t have to read any books on the Destination Jungle theme if you don’t want to.
OK, you’ve convinced me: I’m ready to join. What do I do now?
