All About DAISY
La Bibliothèque en français
Starting July 1, 2004, CNIB Library stopped producing
audiobooks and magazines on cassette tapes for the circulating
collection.
All newly produced audiobooks are now available exclusively in
digital format - on DAISY CD and online at the CNIB Digital
Library.
DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) is a global
standard and is the 'next generation' audio format for people
who are blind or visually impaired, providing a better talking
book experience. Many CNIB clients of all ages who have already
tried DAISY books and magazines like the fact that the books
have a far superior sound quality when compared to books on
tape, fit on just one CD, and permit the reader to go to
specific chapters or pages, place bookmarks, and use an index.
The CNIB Library began producing DAISY titles in 2000,
recognizing that cassette tapes would become obsolete within a
few years. Books on tape have become prohibitively expensive to
produce because the parts for the equipment have become
increasingly scarce.
The library has thousands of DAISY books on CD, and the
collection grows each year.
DAISY books can be read on portable DAISY players or on a
computer. Clients who would like to try out or purchase a DAISY
player can visit a CNIB Consumer Products store. Clients who
cannot purchase a player will be provided with a donated machine
as soon as one becomes available. The CNIB will work with all
clients to facilitate access to DAISY books.
