Volunteer with the CNIB Library
La Bibliothèque en français
Quite simply, without volunteers, there would be no CNIB. The CNIB Library has volunteer opportunities at its Toronto and Montreal locations.
Volunteer opportunities:
More than 300 volunteers are involved in producing audio books for the CNIB Library. Interested volunteer applicants will receive an introduction to CNIB, volunteer application forms, and two audition pieces.
During a follow-up interview, they will learn more details about the responsibilities of a volunteer narrator/technician. After a studio tour, potential volunteers are given an initial screening test, recording themselves reading a list of 50 frequently mispronounced words. They are notified of the test outcome by the end of the next week.
Those with 12 or fewer errors on the word list are invited to return for an audition. During the audition, candidates record their two prepared audition pieces and an unprepared spot piece.
These pieces are then judged by a three-person committee, and selected applicants are expected to participate in a one-and-a-half hour general training session and approximately eight once-weekly recording and editing training sessions. Volunteers then go through a probationary period, working independently as technicians with experienced narrators, during which time their work is reviewed for errors. Candidates who successfully complete the training period are asked for a minimum 2-year commitment, giving 2-3 hours per week of their time.
Volunteer narrator/technician opportunities are location specific. CNIB's recording studios are located in Toronto (at the CNIB Centre) and Montreal. English and some French recordings are recorded in Toronto. French only is recorded in Montreal.
These audio clips represent the standard of narration of the Audio Publishing program. Auditionees will be expected to narrate to a similarly high standard.
