Apply now to become a Volunteer Puppy Raiser!

We need volunteers to raise puppies that are training to be guide dogs for Canadians with sight loss. Volunteer Puppy Raisers are the foundation of our program, helping transform our puppies from lovable bundles of fur to life-changing service dogs.

*We are not currently recruiting Volunteer Puppy Raisers. We encourage you to sign up for our 'Guide Dog Gazette' Newsletter to stay up-to-date on CNIB Guide Dogs. We will notify you if we start recruiting again.

I've applied… what next?

Once you've applied to be a Volunteer Puppy Raiser, here's what you can expect:

  • Your application form will be reviewed by our Guide Dog Program staff, who have decades of experience recruiting and working with individuals and families to raise puppies into guide dogs.
  • If you meet the program criteria, we'll contact you for a telephone interview – a chance to find out more about you, your life circumstances and your interest in this role.
  • From there, the next step is attending an Introduction to Puppy Raising session, followed by an in-person interview with our program staff. This interview would take place in your home.
  • If all goes well, your name will be added to our volunteer list and we will keep you apprised as puppies are ready to join our program.

Please note that you might not get a puppy right away… sometimes, it takes several months before successful volunteers can be matched with an available dog. We promise to keep you posted and ask that you let us know if anything changes on your end.
