The E. (Ben) & Mary Hochhausen Access Technology Research Award


Important Information

Please be advised that for 2009, this Award is dedicated solely to Braille in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Louis Braille, the architect of this medium for Literacy, reading and writing. Research and Scientific application may be considered in 2010 dependent on available funds. Further information will be posted on this site in early January 2010.

Overview:
The award was established by Ben and Mary Hochhausen to further their long-time volunteer and financial contribution to CNIB. This international award encourages research in the field of access technology for people living with vision loss.

Amount:
Grants up to $10,000 are made each year at the discretion of the E. (Ben) and Mary Hochhausen Fund trustees.

Eligibility:
Applications are accepted from any country in the world.

Trustees will consider:

  • Students enrolled in a recognized College, University or equivalent program

  • Researchers from industry, academia or applied science

Awards may be applied to:

  • research projects
  • study at centres of excellence in technology
  • fellowships
  • development of prototypes
  • development costs for bringing important new products to market

NOTE: Candidates are invited to submit a 200 word abstract by the deadline, for an initial review by the Trustees, to be followed by a formal and more detailed submission, only if requested by the trustees. Please see Application Process below.

Deadline:
Initial application should be received by the E. (Ben) and Mary Hochhausen Fund trustees by September 30. The decision of the trustees as to those from whom a formal submission is requested and on the applicant to whom the award is made is final.

Application Process:
Applicants invited to submit a formal submission should provide no more than ten pages, which will include:

  • contact information
  • nature of research or course of study
  • product development or related project
  • relevance to people living with vision loss
  • budget
  • timelines
  • curriculum vitae
  • Two letters of support
