Mary Holmes

By Steven Schnider, CNIB volunteer

Many CNIB volunteers dedicate their time to helping those with vision loss enjoy things that they may no longer have the ability to experience on their own.

Mary Holmes, a volunteer at CNIB has contributed greatly to this service. A retired receptionist and theatre enthusiast, Mary has used her speaking abilities and love of literature to help those with vision loss enjoy books. For the past five years, Mary has read books to tape from her Kitchener home for the use of individual CNIB clients.

Reading books to tape has allowed Mary to meet and develop personal relationships with many clients of CNIB. “It feels as though I am interacting with them in the room,” says Mary of reading books to tape. Several clients have personally requested her specifically for this service. As an added personal touch Mary sometimes even includes friendly personal comments while recording.

For Mary, the rewards have been plentiful. “A lot of gratitude from the people being helped creates a warm glow,” says Mary. She also adds that “CNIB is a great place to volunteer.” Recently diagnosed with macular degeneration, Mary has gained an even greater appreciation for her volunteer contributions at CNIB.

Although many books are now reproduced in DAISY digital format, Mary plans to continue to offer the more personalized book to tape service for clients. She also plans to continue contributing to other CNIB endeavors such as the Annual Crocus Sale. Always ready to lend a hand Mary is often looking to help anyway she can.
