By Steven Schnider, CNIB volunteer

Color Picture of Mr. Donald AndersonFor the last 18 years, Donald Anderson has dedicated himself to serving CNIB through numerous volunteer and employment efforts. From speaking engagements and media interviews to reception work, this CNIB client and volunteer has made a positive impact on the organization and the people we help.

Donald has used his extensive knowledge and experience to help people with vision loss through, one-on-one and group peer support. Donald has focused his efforts on brightening up the attitude of others with vision loss. He shows them that there exists a peer network to help them cope. In helping others, Donald has learned much about himself through volunteering. “I learned that I have a sharp sense of wit.”

Although not in it for the rewards Donald has gained valuable experiences from volunteering. “It makes me a more visible person in the community,” says Donald. Donald also uses his experiences on several municipal committees to promote awareness of CNIB and its mission to enhance independence for people with vision loss and to be the leader in promoting vision health.

In addition to these substantial contributions, Donald has also found satisfaction in performing the day-to-day administrative functions of CNIB. By handling telephone inquiries and updating files, Donald has come into contact with numerous CNIB clients with whom he shares struggles, experiences, and the odd laugh.

In addition to his dedication to CNIB, Donald contributes much of his time to several other volunteer organizations. One of his favourite mottos is, “Give a busy person something to do and you know it will get done”. This phrase gives a great illustration of the kind of passion that Donald has shown to CNIB, to others with vision loss and his community.
