Philip Osborn Pic.PNGHow long have you been a client of Deafblind Services?

"3 years."

How has being Deafblind impacted your life?

"Many things [have been impacted] – communication is an issue – I cannot see and hear. I rely on tactile sign language and I get very tired when trying to understand a conversation. I can't go anywhere on my own – bad balance – safety issues. I'm in my late 60s and I just lost my vision very fast in three years. It is hard for me as it’s new to me. I have been deaf since birth. Family gatherings are hard [I'm] left out. Things aren't the same for me since losing my vision. It is very frustrating in my life now."

How has intervention impacted your life?

"The intervenors are awesome. Those [intervenors] take me out [for]; social interaction, appointments, shopping and help me order my food etc. I thank them a lot. I am so happy to go out with them. At home, I sit more of the time and that's depressing."

What would you like to tell other people about Deafblindness or intervention?

"I would like to tell people how worthwhile it is having intervenors – without them I wouldn't have an opportunity to go out often and have them assist in communication."

Why is Deafblind awareness important to you?

"I don't think many people are aware of us. I wish they would have patience when I want to order something and need time to gather information through tactile signing."
