Katie, Specialist, Deafblind Literacy

How long have you worked in Deafblind Services?

"5 years."

Why did you get into the field?

"I have always enjoyed helping people and have a passion for working with people with hearing and vision loss. I have always been fascinated by Sign Language, it is such a beautiful language."

What do you enjoy most about working in the field?

"I enjoy being out in the community assisting clients with doing daily living. I also find great joy in helping clients improve their reading and writing skills."

What would you like people to know about Deafblindness?

"People need to know that just because someone is Deafblind doesn’t mean that they are completely deaf and completely blind. Most of our clients have some vision or some hearing. Our clients can be independent and are capable of being out in the community doing tasks."

Why is Deafblind awareness important to you?

"It’s important for people to know that there are many different services and opportunities for Deafblind people to continue living independently at home and in the community."
