Chris Hendriks photo.jpgHow long have you been a client of Deafblind Services?
"3-4 years."
How has being Deafblind impacted your life?
"My sight it's not so bad, but my hearing really affects my life big time. People don't sit beside me at a party unless they absolutely have to, I can't go to meetings or concerts alone. I can't play cards because I can't hear what other people are saying."

How has intervention impacted your life?

"Intervenors are really good. They take me to my doctor's appointments, dentist appointments, and they help me with my book keeping."

What would you like to tell other people about Deafblindness or intervention?

"People know about the white cane and that it means you're blind, but people don't know about the red and white barber striped cane means deafblind. It's widely used in England. I think it's important for people to know that so they can recognize that I am Deafblind when I'm out in public."

Why is Deafblind awareness important to you?

"Yes. It's important for the public to know about Deafblindness. If people knew or could recognize that I was Deafblind then when they come talk to me they would know that have to come right in front of my face and speak slowly so that I can understand them. Many people right now don't understand and they speak too quickly from the side or behind me and I don't hear them at all."
