Volunteer Role Description
Title: Orientation and Mobility Assistant
Reports to: Specialist, Orientation and Mobility
Summary of responsibilities:
To assist a person(s) with vision loss to acquire orientation & mobility skills to travel independently and safely in their communities.
Summary of position tasks:
- Reinforcing lessons initially taught by an Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
- Teaching the Sighted Guide Technique.
- Reinforcing indoor precane skills.
- Reinforcing new routes initially taught by an Orientation & Mobility Specialist.
- Document and submit service hours on a monthly basis to the Coordinator, Volunteer Services
Qualifications:
- A genuine interest in working with persons with vision loss
- Reliable, resourceful and responsible
- Good communication skills
- Respectful of confidentiality
- Empathetic
- Travel required
Commitment:
- Flexible schedule – varies dependent on client needs
- minimum one-year time commitment
Training:
- Comprehensive orientation to CNIB and its services
- Training specific to duties associated with role
Supervision:
- Orientation and Mobility Specialist will provide ongoing supervision and support
