Triathlete turns life around, gives back to CNIB
Craig Aucoin has participated
in seven triathlons and is currently training to ride across Canada on a tandem bicycle with his good friend and personal trainer, Lloyd McLean. Craig is looking to raise awareness and funds for CNIB and two other charities that have played an important role in his personal development.
Twenty years ago, this would have been unthinkable for Craig. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, his eyesight became progressively worse in his mid teens.
Growing up, Craig was always active in sports, playing hockey, soccer and riding motorbikes.
“At age 16, I had to give up all sports because I couldn’t locate the puck or the ball,” says Craig. “I was also told I couldn’t get my driver’s license– that crushed me. Over the next seven years, I battled depression, blowing up to 240 pounds, eating everything and anything in sight. I shut everyone out and kept to myself.”
That’s when Craig realized that he needed to take charge of his own life.
“I began by joining my local gym and I actually grew to love this new healthy and active lifestyle,” says Craig.
CNIB’s programs and services helped Craig re-gain his confidence and independence. CNIB’s Independent Living specialist taught him safe techniques for cooking and how to label things around the house.
Through CNIB’s Assistive Technology services, Craig learned about screen reading programs and other technology that help make his life easier.
“When I finally accepted my vision loss, I began to notice big changes,” says Craig. “CNIB helped me turn my life around and that is why I’m giving back to them by raising funds and awareness for their programs and services during my bicycle tour across Canada.”
