Our Mission
- To collaborate with the research community in measuring and understanding the impact of sight loss on social determinants of health (social inclusion) within the Canadian population
- To develop a longitudinal understanding of the impact of programmatic intervention on social determinants of health within our client population
- To compile and curate a comprehensive series of metrics that document the impact of sight loss on social determinants of health in Canada
- To educate relevant stakeholders about the key findings arising from our research endeavours

How We Work
The Research Team carries out our mission by:
- Fielding original qualitative and quantitative research to inform strategy;
- Analyzing internal and external data sources to produce relevant insights;
- Disseminating resources and tools that enable understanding of the lived experience of Canadians with sight loss;
- Supporting locally or externally driven research relevant to our mission; and,
- Granting funds through donor-endowed research awards.

Getting involved as a research volunteer with CNIB means that you will be making a lasting difference for people who are blind or partially sighted. CNIB's research team helps to support the direction of programs and services for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted in your community through:
- surveys
- focus groups
- literature reviews
- qualitative and quantitative data analysis

Submitting a CNIB Research Project Proposal
This document is aimed to help you in your research project proposal process. For any questions please communicate with research@cnib.ca
Before you submit your proposal
You may want to consider getting in touch with either the Director of Research or a contact at the organization to answer any questions you may have before submitting your formal proposal.
They may assist you in determining scope and what CNIB can offer you.
Make sure you have all documentation ready in English or French.
You will need:
- The lead researchers’ Tri Council Certificate
- Proof of approval from an ethics board
- The lead researcher’s curriculum vitae
Other supporting documentation such as protocols, interview guides, letters of approval can also be submitted.
Submitting your proposal
To submit your proposal, please go this Microsoft Form, linked here. This is the preferred method for submitting proposals. If you are unable to submit using this method, please assemble all your documents in a Word document and email them to research@cnib.ca. You can find all the questions that must answered annexed to this document.
Please fill the Microsoft Form as fully as you can. Successful applications are specific, complete and thorough.
Please note that though the Microsoft Form is in English and the Committee primarily works and communicates in English, all information can be submitted in French. CNIB will translate the documents to review them.
What to expect after your submission
After your proposal is submitted it will be reviewed by CNIB’s Research Projects Reviewing Committee, which meets at least once a month. They review and assess submissions.
You may be contacted by one of the members of the committee on its behalf to clarify a point of your proposal or for additional information.
You can expect to receive an answer regarding the approval of your proposal within 45 calendar days of your proposal.
