CNIB reviewing options for summer camps at Bowen Lodge
Outpouring of public support and donations may enable programs to be offered for ‘09
April 7, 2009 (Vancouver) — Following an outpouring of community generosity and several funding commitments, CNIB announced today that it is exploring options to continue providing summer camp experiences for children and youth with vision loss at Bowen Lodge By The Sea in 2009.
“CNIB is inspired by the passion of our stakeholders and the pledges of support we’ve received from people across British Columbia in response to this issue,” said John Mulka, executive director of CNIB’s BC/Yukon Division. “We’re evaluating what this new funding might make possible this year and in future years.”
The camps, which in previous years ran over six weeks in the summer at the CNIB-owned facility, had been suspended as a result of a sustained decline in enrolment and high operating costs – factors compounded by challenging economic times. Media coverage of the decision inspired corporations and individuals across British Columbia to pledge funds in support of the camp programs. Commitments to date include a $50,000 pledge made yesterday by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation.
“CNIB recognizes how important our Bowen Lodge camps have been for many Canadians with vision loss, as a source of fun, friendship and training in independent living skills,” said John Mulka, executive director of CNIB’s BC/Yukon Division. “With the support of the BC community, we’ll be exploring what a sustainable and cost-effective program might look like moving forward.”
In addition to serving as the venue for CNIB summer camp programs, the Bowen Lodge By The Sea facility is available for rental by the general public. All proceeds from facility rentals support CNIB’s programs and services for Canadians with vision loss.
