Montréal Québec Vancouver Public Library (VPL) became the newest recipient of the prestigious Dr. Dayton M. VPL City Librarian, Paul Whitney accepted the award at a reception held during the Canadian Library Association's annual conference.

Vancouver Public Library is to be commended for its outreach, commitment to accessibility, and its inclusiveness for all print disabilities, says Margaret McGrory, Vice-President, Information Systems & CIO & Managing Director CNIB Library. It is a privilege to work alongside Paul Whitney and his staff to bridge the gap in access to information.

Currently, only five per cent of published material in Canada is available in an accessible format that someone with a print disability can read. CNIB supports the establishment of a nationwide equitable library system that allows delivery of library services to all Canadians through the public sector.

The Dr. Dayton M. Forman Memorial Award recognizes individuals or organizations demonstrating extraordinary commitment and leadership to Canadians living with vision loss. Introduced in 1996 by CNIB, the Dr. Dayton M. Forman Memorial Award is offered annually in memory of an outstanding humanitarian and longstanding CNIB volunteer.

Previous recipients include: Canada Post, Calgary Public Library, Industry Canada, Frank Clegg, Past President, Microsoft Canada, BC College and Institute Library Services (CILS) and the University of Toronto Adaptive Technology Resource Centre.
