CNIB's Lake Joe Vision Team raises $45,000 for "Buy a Bed" campaign and "Sponsor a Camper" program

7/24/2017

MACTIER, ON – CNIB’s Lake Joe Vision Team raised $45,000 at the Canada 150 BBQ in support of CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre (“Lake Joe”), an accessible lakefront facility in Muskoka that provides a unique blend of recreation and vision rehabilitation in a safe, inclusive environment.

Guests were treated to a Black Angus Fine Meats & Game BBQ, local brew and prosecco. Entertainment was provided by Annette Haas, Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and Lucas Haneman, 2010 iFactor winner, a musical competition for those with sight loss.

Visitors also had the chance to play ‘Closest to the Putt’, a golf game that encouraged players to get a ‘hole in one’ while wearing specially-made goggles that simulate various eye diseases.

"Canoeing, campfires, swimming and forging new friendships to create lasting memories – that's the magic of summer camp. Each year, over 600 children, families and adults attend Lake Joe programs, not only for the recreational activities, but for the confidence building and support offered by a community that understands living with sight loss. For most, it's an experience they'll never forget," says Monique Pilkington, Executive Director, CNIB ON-North. "With more than 75 neighbours joining us at the Canada 150 BBQ, CNIB's Lake Joe Vision Team raised $45,000 for the "Buy a Bed" campaign and the "Sponsor a Camper" bursary program which is incredible! I'd like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lake Joe neighbours Nancy and Steve Simonot for hosting the event as well as all of our guests. With your support, we're changing what it is to be blind today."

Ms. Simonot is the Founding Partner/Pharmacist and Head of Clinical Group for NKS Heath, one of the BBQ’s main sponsors.

"You only have to spend a short amount of time at Lake Joe before you realize what an extraordinary place it is,” says Ms. Simonot. “Our son, Matt, volunteered here a few years ago and we were taken aback by his stories at the end of each day that demonstrated what an impact this place has on the children. Many were riding a bike or doing water sports for the first time, saying every day was the 'greatest day ever!' I feel very privileged be part of CNIB's Lake Joe Vision Team, raising funds to help more children and adults with sight loss learn new skills and empower themselves while having fun.”

Sponsors include: Barak Queija at Investors Group (prosecco), WCDP Foundation (Bahamas retreat), Chelsey Penrice and Harvey Kalles Real Estate Ltd., Brokerage for Muskoka ("Closest to the Putt" prize) and several silent auction donors.
