CNIB is looking for Vision Mate Volunteers in communities across Nova Scotia

​CNIB is recruiting Vision Mate volunteers to provide regular one-on-one assistance and companionship for a person who is blind or partially sighted in Dartmouth, Halifax, Hubley, Kentville, Lake Echo, Lower Sackville, New Minas, Spryfield, Wellington, Windsor and Wolfville.

Can you spare two hours a week to:

  • Visit a client in his/her home or other suitable environment at a mutually convenient time?
  • Provide help with reading, organizing, walking, and assisting with errands?

Activities are mutually agreed upon, based on client need. Volunteers are not expected to drive, so outings would usually take place on foot, by public transportation, taxi or through accessible transit.

Training will take place in Halifax on Monday, February 15th from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Thursday, March 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Training will take place in Wolfville on Wednesday, March 16th from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

DARTMOUTH:

  • Woman, 50s, Dartmouth: She would like someone to go for walks with and socialize with and who wouldn’t mind her three cats. She enjoys talking about her granddaughters, and cats. She likes to bake, clean and craft. She doesn’t like people who swear.
  • Woman, 80s, Dartmouth: She is looking for a visitor who would also read to her classic novels. She enjoys listening to classical music and talking about news and politics.
  • Woman, 50s, North Preston: She is looking for help reading books and mail. She’d also like someone who could teach her new computer skills. She enjoys listening to music, reading, and knitting.

HALIFAX:

  • Woman, 60s, Clayton Park: She is looking for a volunteer to read her mail and books and help with grocery shopping and going for walks. She has a retired guide dog and enjoys watching the news and baking.
  • Woman, 80s, Fairview: She is looking for help going for walks and she would enjoy the visits. She enjoys Reader's Digest magazine. She does not like to talk about her personal life.
  • Woman, 40s, Fairview
  • Woman, 50s, Halifax
  • Woman, 90s, Halifax: She is looking for an older volunteer to read her mail and books and socialize. She enjoys books and watching curling.
  • Woman, 40s, Halifax: She enjoys talking about meditation, yoga, science fiction, spirituality, and movies. She has a cat.

HUBLEY:

  • Man, 80s, Hubley: He has a dog.

KENTVILLE:

  • Woman, 80s, Kentville: She is looking for a volunteer to read her mail, pick her outfits, and go for walks with. She enjoys knitting, reading, working on canvas, and going for walks.
  • Woman, 80s, Kentville: She is looking for a volunteer to help with reading, organizing, and going for walks. She enjoys talking about history and is learning the piano.
  • Man, 90s, Kentville: He is looking for help organizing pictures and photo albums. He has a bird. A volunteer, over 25, who can play guitar would be ideal on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
  • Woman, 90s, Kentville: She is looking for an older volunteer to help with walking and writing. She enjoys talking about the news, medicare, crafts, and poetry.

LAKE ECHO:

  • Man, 70s, Lake Echo: He is looking for someone to read to him. He used to go fishing and play baseball. He still enjoys attending hockey games and has three cats.
  • Man, 50s, Lake Echo: He would like help with reading, biking, running errands and going for walks. He’d also enjoy the visits. He has a guide dog.

LOWER SACKVILLE:

  • Man, 50s, Lower Sackville: He is looking for someone to go fishing with as well as walking, books, grocery shopping, and socializing. He enjoys watching movies and going to the library.
  • Woman, 20s, Lower Sackville: She would like a volunteer between 25-40 who could help with many everyday tasks in the afternoon. She is interested in shopping, babies, coupons, cooking, and computers. She has a cat. She is in a wheelchair.
  • Man, 50s, Lower Sackville: He is looking for help reading mail and books, grocery shopping, and going for walks. He enjoys talking about sports and watching hockey.

NEW MINAS:

  • Woman, 80s, New Minas: She’s looking for help between Tuesday and Thursday with reading bills and books, organizing, grocery shopping, walking, and social visiting. She enjoys audio books. art, horses, watching TV, and gardening (flowers and vegetables).
  • Man, 80s, New Minas: He is looking for someone to help him with wood working as well as some reading and walking. He enjoys helping around the house and volunteering with the Lion's Club. He has a dog.

SPRYFIELD:

  • Woman, 80s, Spryfield: She would like a volunteer to read her books and go for walks with her after dinner. She likes talking about her relatives and says she has a young mind!
  • Woman, 40s, Spryfield: She is looking for help reading mail and books, socializing, grocery shopping, and reading music. She enjoys music, documentaries, sharing stories, and doing arts/crafts. She plays the keyboard and flute and is relearning how to knit. She’s free on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She also plays goalball on Sundays and wouldn’t mind someone going with her. She has a cat and doesn’t like smokers or vulgar language.
  • Woman, 30s, Spryfield: She's looking for a volunteer to spend time with, attend local events, read mail, and help where needed. She has a guide dog, a small dog, and two cats.
  • Woman, 50s, Spryfield: She would like a woman to come read to her, grocery shopping, walking for recreation, and socializing during afternoons. She enjoys playing crib, getting out, watching TV, and listening to audio books. She is in a wheelchair and is allergic to smoke.

WELLINGTON:

  • Woman, 90s, Wellington: She is looking for someone to read and help with her sewing. She'd also like someone to talk and walk with. She enjoys talking about the weather, news, sewing, and local going-ons.

WINDSOR:

  • Man, 90s, Windsor: He's in a wheelchair and wants someone to read him the newspaper, go for walks, have a cup of coffee, and record his stories on a tape recorder. He enjoys gardening and making wine.
  • Woman, 40s, Windsor: She’d like a volunteer to help during afternoons.

WOLFVILLE:

  • Woman, 60s, Wolfville: She is looking for help with sorting through old clothes and papers and going for walks. She likes talking about cooking, gardening, politics, world events, and music. She has a small dog and is free during weekdays.
