CNIB warns Moncton donors of fraudulent canvassers

New Brunswickers should be on high alert as one or more individuals are canvassing door-to-door in Moncton fraudulently claiming to be representatives of CNIB.

CNIB recently received complaints from concerned residents of a suspicious individual attempting to solicit donations within the Moncton area. The person in question is accepting cash or credit donations on behalf of CNIB – and promising donors that a tax receipt would be issued within 24 hours.

CNIB is not conducting a door-to-door campaign in New Brunswick at this time and has not done so since 2005. CNIB also discourages cash donations. It is unknown how many individuals have been affected by this fraudulent activity.

Throughout the year, CNIB is responsible for the planning and promotion of several fundraising initiatives, including Dining in the Dark, Eye Bowl for CNIB and a number of direct mail campaigns. All CNIB promotional and/or solicitation materials and volunteers are clearly identified and official CNIB receipts are issued on the spot or via mail or email.

CNIB asks that anyone approached by suspicious individuals attempting to solicit donations through door-to-door canvassing efforts on behalf of the charity to please contact their local RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.

For donors who want to truly support CNIB and the personalized rehabilitation support it provides to New Brunswickers with vision loss, you can safely make online donations through or by calling the CNIB Helpline at 1.800.563.2642.

How donors can protect themselves:

  • Do not allow yourself to be pressured into immediately making a donation. You can make a cheque payable to the charity and mail at a later date, or donate online at the organization’s official website.
  • Ask door-to-door canvassers for identification and proof that they are authorized to solicit funds for the charity. You can call the organization to ensure the person is legitimate.
  • Only deal with reputable charities – conduct background research to verify the charitable campaign or cause.
