CNIB warns Corner Brook residents of fraudulent canvassing

10/15/2013

CNIB and the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) are asking residents in the city of Corner Brook to be aware of a canvasser going door-to-door fraudulently soliciting pledges, claiming to be a representative of CNIB and carrying a CCB pledge sheet.

Neither CNIB nor CCB are conducting a door-to-door campaign anywhere in Newfoundland and Labrador at this time. CNIB also discourages cash donations.

CNIB and CCB asks that anyone approached by suspicious individuals attempting to solicit pledges through door-to-door canvassing efforts to please contact their local RNC or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.

How donors can protect themselves:

  • Do not allow yourself to be pressured into immediately making a donation. You can make a cheque payable to the charity and mail at a later date, or donate online at the organization’s official website.
  • Ask door-to-door canvassers for identification and proof that they are authorized to solicit funds for the charity. You can call the organization to ensure the person is legitimate.
  • Only deal with reputable charities – conduct background research to verify the charitable campaign or cause.
