Everyday Hero

Why donate to CNIB NL’s Everyday Hero Campaign?

I have had the privilege of being a CNIB Everyday Hero for the past five years. I can tell you from firsthand experience how vital CNIB programs and services are to those, like me, who are partially sighted or blind. Over the past five years I have also learned how important it is to contribute to the well being of others who live in our communities. By doing so we are making our community and our province a better place to live and work. That is why I continue to reach out.

I have met some incredible people at CNIB, none more so than 3rd Year MUN Student, Kelly Picco, a CNIB Youth Ambassador. She said it best. “Being legally blind, doesn’t make me different; I just have to do things differently.” Our job is to be the enablers that ensure students like Kelly receives the support needed to finish her degree at MUN, find meaningful employment and be an equal contributor to our community.

We know that only 20 per cent of people who are blind or partially sighted receive a university or college degree- we have the opportunity to change that.

Having had to learn to adjust to vision loss myself, I understand the challenges and place a high priority, as an Everyday Hero, on ensuring CNIB will always be there for those who need them. It is an honour and it comes with a personal mandate to raise much needed funds so that CNIB will be there for other young students, like Kelly.
