Requirements

Age

The minimum age to volunteer at CNIB is 14. Students can help with special events, fundraising and administrative work during school breaks.

Volunteers who work with clients or client information must be at least 18 years old.

Location

Volunteer opportunities may vary by location. There are opportunities throughout New Brunswick.

Time Commitment

You may be interested in volunteering, but are concerned about the time commitment. CNIB strives to make volunteering mutually beneficial and offers a variety of opportunities that may appeal to all levels of availability.

Many of the opportunities ask for a weekly six-month commitment (Vision Mates, Ambassadors, etc.). But CNIB also needs people for special events, short-term projects, and occasional commitments. Positions based at a CNIB office can only be done during regular office hours, but many of the positions have flexible schedules and volunteers contribute hours during evenings and weekends. CNIB recognizes that your time is valuable and will make every effort to accommodate successful candidates in a role that best suits their level of availability.

Orientation & Training

If you are concerned that you don’t know enough about CNIB or vision loss, don’t be! All volunteers attend an orientation during which they learn about what CNIB does, the clients served, and the impact of vision loss. After this orientation, all volunteers receive training specific to their placement.

Other Volunteer Requirements

Any position that includes contact with clients and/or confidential CNIB information will require a Police Record Check, the cost of which is refundable with a receipt after three months of volunteering.

Volunteers are also expected to read and sign CNIB’s Volunteer Code of Conduct. It outlines what you can expect from CNIB and what CNIB expects from you.

Every position description outlines the specific requirements for that role. You can request a complete position description by contacting Christine Kennedy-Babineau, Coordinator of Volunteer Services.
