Thanks to Manny Mehta, CNIB clients in Toronto are getting around the city more easily than ever before.

Mehta has been CNIB’s transportation coordinator in Toronto since 1996, and plays a vital role in getting people where they need to go. He arranges for volunteer drivers to take clients to medical appointments in the community, or to appointments or group meetings at the CNIB National Office.

He also helps distribute Toronto Transit passes to clients, a vital element of independence for many people who use CNIB’s programs and services.

Before taking on the role of Transportation Coordinator, Mehta worked as an administrative assistant in CNIB’s Fund Development department. He also helped in the ESL program as both a sighted guide and as a translator in Gujarati and Hindi.

Mehta has gained a reputation for going where he is most needed, and has never missed a day on which he was scheduled to volunteer.

“What do I get out of it? Satisfaction,” says Mehta energetically.

“I’m at the point of my life when I have worked for about 28 years in Toronto. I happily flourished here and I want to give back to the people of this great city.

“CNIB is a very good organization, meeting the needs of people with vision loss, and I just enjoy being a small part of it,” he says modestly.

“This is the right organization [for me] because of the people with whom you work. CNIB employees are very friendly, very cooperative and very courteous.”

And it seems CNIB feels the same way about Mehta.

“Manny has been a valued volunteer since he began,” says Kathy Dennis, Coordinator of Volunteer Services for Toronto.

“His friendly nature and willingness to help make him an asset to CNIB.”
