Things to consider before making an endowment

There are two minimum total contribution levels for named endowments:

  • $50,000 for a named endowment that allows you to specify exactly which CNIB programs and services your contribution supports;

  • and $10,000 for an endowment that does not allow you to specify the programs and services you’ll support.

If neither of these is an amount you’re comfortable with, consider giving in another way, like through a gift in your will, charitable annuity, gift of property or a monthly gift

Consider making your endowment with broad terms about the programs and services it will benefit.

CNIB’s needs change over time. For example, an endowment gift to CNIB in 1918 for people blinded in war would have been appropriate at that time but, thanks to recent history and improvements in medicine, would be of limited use today.

You and your family can contribute to your endowment again later.

You can always add to your endowment with gifts made during your lifetime as well as through your estate, as part of your legacy. You can also choose to have your endowment’s funding come just from you, or open it up to your family and friends.
