Name: Dr. Brendan Miles

Constituency: Calgary Heritage

Political Party: Liberal

Would you and your Party support legislation such as Bill C-65 “Support for Canadians with Print Disabilities Act”, introduced by the last government, that will allow Canada to accede the Marrakesh Treaty?

I specifically support equal access to published works for the visually impaired. I will advocate for implementing mandatory limitations and exceptions to copyright rules, consistent with principles set out in the Marrakesh Treaty.

What would you and your party do to ensure that sustainable funding is in place for the production of alternate format literature for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted?

I would advocate for speaking with stakeholders, discuss the needs, challenges and concerns of those stakeholders, such as the CNIB, and seek to implement funding that will be sustainable and appropriate to ensure the success of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the tools necessary to fulfill the obligation of implementing it.

What would you and your Party do to close this gap and help those living with vision loss find employment in your community?

I'm committed to building an accessible and inclusive society. I would seek to work with municipal, provincial and federal governments, as well as Canadians with vision loss and their advocates to ensure that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is implemented. The Liberal Party will prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability, promote employment opportunities, and encourage entrepreneurship for those who are blind and partially sighted.

Do you and your Party agree that prescription drug labels should be accessible for all Canadians, including those who are blind or partially sighted?

I do believe, and agree, that prescription drug labels should be accessible for all Canadians, and we must work to ensure that correct medication is taken, and identified in a manner that sees that is done.

If elected, would you and your party work with the Canada Standards Association, individual companies and POS machine providers and manufacturers to ensure that all ABM’s and POS machines are accessible in Canada, including keypads and audio output?

I intend to work with all stakeholders to ensure that these machines are accessible in Canada in a responsible and thoughtful way.
