How can I donate to CNIB?
You can donate by phone, by mail, in person or by using our secure online donation form. You can make a donation by cash, cheque, money order or credit card (please do not send cash by mail). Other ways to donate include monthly donations, gifts of securities or by remembering CNIB in your will. For more information, see our donation section.
Can I get a tax receipt for my donation?
Tax-deductible receipts are automatically generated for all donations over $15. We typically do not send receipts for donations under $15, unless specifically requested.
I lost my tax receipt. Can I get a duplicate mailed to me?
A copy of your receipt or a re-print cannot be issued; however, we can issue a replacement receipt in accordance with the Canada Revenue Agency's income tax regulations.
When will I receive my receipt in the mail?
CNIB typically sends out receipts to our supporters within two weeks. For donors who have chosen to give each month through our pre-authorized monthly giving plan, receipts are sent out once a year at the end of January.
Do you sell my name and address?
CNIB does not rent, lease or sell personal information. To try to keep our fundraising costs as low as possible and find new donors, we do from time to time make our donor list available to other carefully selected organizations. However if a donor requests not to disclose their name and address, we honour that request by coding their personal information in our system as such and do not make the details available.
I just sent in a donation, and then got a mailing asking for a donation. Why is this?
It can occur that a donor will receive a mailing just after sending in a donation and there are a couple of reasons for this, the most common being that a donor's cheque and our letter have crossed in the mail. The reason for this is that we have to prepare our mailing list well in advance of the actual mail date. If you have sent in a donation, and then received a mailing and you don't wish to give, please disregard the request.
How do I make a donation in honour or memory of someone?
Gifts in memory can be made online, by phone, by mail or in person at any of our offices across the country. To process such donations efficiently, we require the following pieces of information: the name of the individual being honoured; the name and address of the individual, family or next-of-kin to whom you wish to send a letter of notification and your name and address so we can send you a tax-deductible receipt.
I am planning to get married and instead of gifts I have asked for donations to be made to CNIB. Can this be done?
You can make a donation in honour or recognition of an individual or special event such as a holiday, birthday, anniversary, wedding, or even the birth of a child. CNIB will then send a letter notifying the honoree on your behalf. Just let us know the details when you make your donation.
What is the best way to contribute money to CNIB?
A paperless debit or credit card monthly gift is the most efficient way to donate to CNIB. This automated method of giving keeps our fundraising costs to a bare minimum while ensuring that we have a reliable source of income to fund long-term projects. It's simple to set up and it's always in your control. You can change or stop your donation at any time with a simple phone call.
You may also wish to consider leaving a gift to CNIB in your will. Almost half of our funding comes from people who have done this. These gifts play a huge role in how CNIB shapes our programs and services, and allows us to plan vital research far into the future.
Is CNIB funded by government?
Most people are surprised to learn that only a small portion of CNIB's funding comes from government. Although we believe that government should be providing ongoing, guaranteed funding for vision loss rehabilitation services in Canada, we still rely heavily on the generosity of our donors.
How does CNIB compare to other vision health organizations in Canada?
There really are no other national organizations that are dedicated to the issue of vision health in such a comprehensive way. We are the first place people turn when vision loss happens, and we are leaders in public education, advocacy, accessible design and applied and medical vision health research. No other Canadian organization has the vision loss expertise and knowledge to do all of this as effectively nationwide.
I can't contribute money right now. How else can I help?
Volunteer your time! This can be just as valuable as a financial donation. Volunteers are the backbone of everything we do at CNIB. We have a variety of rewarding positions available across the country, and your help makes a real difference. You can also join our advocacy efforts or consider giving the gift of sight.
Can you reduce the amount of mail I am receiving?
Of course. There are a number of options available to you and the choice is entirely yours. Simply give our Donor Relations team a call and they can make the change immediately.
Does CNIB do door-to-door fundraising?
From time to time CNIB does run Door-to-Door campaigns in some neighbourhoods. To protect yourself from sound-a-like organizations, we suggest that you do not give cash at the door and please ask our volunteer canvassers to show their CNIB badges. If you wish to write a cheque, please make it payable to CNIB.
