Winston Gordon Award for Technological Advancement in the Field of Blindness and Visual Impairment
Overview:
Winston Gordon was a Canadian entrepreneur who lost his vision in early childhood. He volunteered with CNIB throughout his life, where his skills as a leader and a role model were greatly valued. In 1976, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
The Winston Gordon Award, established by CNIB in 1988, is presented annually to an individual or group who has made significant technological advances benefiting people with vision loss. Applications are also invited from mainstream suppliers of goods and services, such as telecommunication providers and domestic appliance manufacturers, as well as developers of assistive technology, such as computer applications making information accessible to people who are blind or partially sighted.
Amount of Award:
The Award consists of a 24-carat gold medal.
Eligibility:
- There is no restriction regarding age or citizenship.
- The significant advances in, or applications of, technology must have occurred within 10 years of nomination. The device or applications must have a documented benefit to people who are blind or partially sighted.
- The award may be presented to an individual, group or organization, including inventors, designers, corporations and academic institutions and suppliers of goods and services.
- The device or application must be currently available, broadly distributed and accepted by people who are blind or partially sighted.
Deadlines:
Nominations may be made by anyone, including the nominee, and must be received by CNIB by June 30 of each year.
Application Process:
To submit a nomination, please write a letter to the Winston Gordon Committee nominating the individual or group for its products or services, and explaining how the nominee meets or surpasses the eligibility criteria and matches the goals of the award.
