Insight Summer 2015

Welcome to the summer edition of Insight! This month we’re bringing back Night Steps - our annual walk under the stars, we want to help you get ready to vote in the upcoming federal election, and we’ll introduce you to a cool new Shop CNIB product.

Night Steps is back!

This fall, CNIB Night Steps is back for its fourth year and will be bigger and better than ever with new walk locations, new easy-to-use fundraising tools and a new way to get involved through Night Steps My Way.

Night Steps is a fun and easy fundraising walk under the stars that’s taking place in five regions and nine cities this year:

  1. Winnipeg, MB – August 27, 2015
  2. London, ON – September 18, 2015
  3. Prince George, BC – September 19, 2015
  4. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario – September 25, 2015
  5. Lower Mainland, BC - September 26, 2015
  6. Regina, SK – September 26, 2015
  7. Whitby, ON – October 2, 2015
  8. Lethbridge, AB – October 2, 2015
  9. Whitehorse, Yukon – October 3, 2015

Funds raised through CNIB Night Steps walks support our vital services for people who are blind or partially sighted, such as training on how to travel independently, use a computer or overcome the emotional challenges of vision loss.

Can’t find a walk in your local community? Why not create your own through Night Steps My Way? Night Steps My Way is a self-planned walk that you can arrange to do individually or as a team in your own community, on a date and time of your choosing, while still raising funds for CNIB. Night Steps My Way walkers receive all of the same fundraising and training tips, access to online tools and cool Night Steps swag, including t-shirt and glow items.

Taking part is easy! Register as a team or an individual and we’ll give you all the tools you need to make fundraising simple and fun including expert tips and tricks. If walking isn’t for you, join us as a volunteer or make a donation to a team or walker in your community or even across the country.

Join us for CNIB Night Steps 2015 and help us change the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted. Visit to get involved.

Tech Access: SmartLux Digital – the next generation of magnifier

Portable video magnifiers are quickly becoming some of the most widely used products for people who are blind or partially sighted. The portable SmartLux Digital Video Magnifier from Eschenbach Optik provides users with a number of features that make it one of the most popular video products on the market today:

  • Wide range of magnification levels: The 5x, 7x, 9x, and 12x magnification options available (with lower magnification available when the product is used in hand-held mode) make reading books, newspapers and magazines as well as prescription bottles, food packaging and menus possible for a wide range of users.
  • Large coated screen: The 5 inch screen allows for a number of letters to be seen at once while anti-glare coating prevents ceiling light reflections from interfering with the user’s experience. The screen’s hard coat minimizes scratching and extends the life of the magnifier.
  • Flip-out reading and writing stand: When the stand is fully extended (reading mode), the product slides across a page for easy reading. When extended half-way (writing mode), the product can be used to easily sign  cheques or notes, complete a crossword puzzle or engage in hands-free tasks such as changing a hearing aid battery, threading a needle or painting or trimming fingernails.
  • Five viewing modes: A high-contrast mode and four colour combination options allow you to select the view that fits your needs, helping to sharpen the image and enhance the print – thereby making it easier to read!
  • Ease of use: There are only four buttons on the SmartLux Digital: an on/off button and buttons to change the magnification, to change the viewing mode and to take a photo.
  • Lightweight and compact: Weighing only 220 grams, the SmartLux Digital is easy to hold when in use and easy to fit into a pocket or purse when not in use.
  • Plus more!: Other features include image storage of up to 20 photos, an automatic shut-off mechanism, a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and protective hard foam case.
