Job Title: Lead, Service Support

Salary: First Year Salary $550/week

Term: May 2018 to August 2018, with the possibility of a Fall contract extension

Location: CNIB Lake Joseph Centre (MacTier, ON)


CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre (commonly known as “Lake Joe”) is a fully accessible lakefront residential facility located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, providing a unique blend of recreation, skills training, social interaction, and personal discovery in a safe, inclusive environment. Two hours north of Toronto, Lake Joe stretches over 12.5 acres of waterfront property on the northwest corner of beautiful Lake Joseph. Staff and volunteers provide a wide range of high quality programs to people of all ages who are living with vision loss.
The Lead, Service Support will create a safe, inclusive, supportive environment for guests with additional needs beyond vision loss, with a focus on best guest experience. This role enhances the guest experience by supporting guests' participation in daily programming and assisting with supportive activities that promote guests' independence (assisting with laundry, setting up guests with tools to shower independently, etc.). This role uses behavioural support and modification skills in order to ensure that all guests are able to maximize their camp experience. This is accomplished through creative planning, energetic facilitation, and excellent interpersonal skills. This role also supports other functions of the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre (Wellness, Guest Services, recreation programming, off-sites, etc.) as needed. 

Essential Duties entail (but not limited to):

Ensure guests have a fun, safe and inclusive Lake Joe experience
Support guests with daily routines
Act as an advocate for guests to help ensure needs (physical and emotional) are met
Plan and implement activities that meet guests' recreational and leisure needs
Assist guests in getting to, and attending activities
In conjunction with the Management team, actively participate in the creation and implementation of behaviour support plans 
Energetically and inclusively facilitate recreation programs (crafts, off-site field trips, camp fires, etc.) for senior, adult, youth, and family guests
Demonstrate appropriate discretion and language with all guests
Take a leadership role when concerns arise (incontinence, outbursts, spills, etc.) to ensure situation is resolved in supportive manner
Positively support Wellness, Guest Services, Tuck and recreation programming
Uphold all standards and policies of the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre, with particular care to customer service and guest needs
In an effort to expand upon Lake Joe's programming, provide new and creative ideas
Assist guests by taking an active role in all dining room duties and responsibilities, including serving meals
Welcome guests by taking an active role in all duties pertaining to change over day
Assist guests in the event of an emergency or whenever necessary
Provide support to all staff, guests, volunteers and visitors
Actively participate in staff meetings and all ongoing training
Assist with staff training, as required
Work as a team member taking on other areas of responsibilities as need arises
Work on individual assignments as needed
Understand and be sensitive to unique and safety considerations when working with individuals with additional needs
Provide assistance to guests to ensure their safety at all times
Champion a Culture of Volunteerism, by supporting an environment where volunteers are respected and valued members of the team
Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: (Education, Training, Experience):

Strong interpersonal skills including patience and empathy
Demonstration of strong communication skills
Experience working with special populations
Knowledge and experience in recreation programs and settings
Ability to work in a team setting and independently
Swimming certifications such as Bronze Cross/NLS an asset
"G" Class driver's license and current Driver's Abstract an asset
Must provide current (within 6 months) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check
Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR "C"
Must be able to assist in daily living activities
Ability to increase guests' comfort, safety and mobility
Ability to assist guests with nutrition, ambulation and hygiene
Experience working with people within all age groups, with vision loss or who are deaf-blind is an asset
Ability to work flexible hours as well as standard camp hours
Must be self-directed and motivated
Ability to work in a changing and busy environment
Must reside at CNIB's Lake Joseph Centre during operational season
Must be willing to share accommodations with other staff member
