Job Title:

Assistant, Assistive Technology  


Full Time


Calgary, AB


Covering a broad range of duties and responsibilities, this position will demonstrate, assess and provide information to individuals who are blind or partially sighted in the use of products and technology sold both in the local Saleroom and online at Shop CNIB as well as assist with STEP administrative duties.

Essential Duties entail (but not limited to):

  • Provide demonstration, instruction, information, support and advice to consumers on adaptive equipment and technical aides available in local saleroom and through Shop CNIB
  • Process sales in the EPOS system 
  • Process benefits under the Alberta Specialized Technical Equipment Program (STEP), Veterans Affairs, and other 3rd party funders
  • Receive stock ensuring accuracy of product counts and proper storage of the same.  Work with National Saleroom to ensure appropriate stock levels of popular equipment.  Introduce new product items to consumers when available
  • Arrange for equipment repairs and replacements as required
  • Maintain tracking of monthly departmental charges, first canes, subsidized canes and children’s canes
  • Demonstrate adaptive equipment and technical aides to internal/external sources for public awareness and educational events 
  • Assists individuals with a plan for the implementation of the assistive technology recommendations, including acquisition, set-up and configuration of the assistive technology and provides training as necessary
  • Ensures timely delivery and set-up of assistive technology equipment as required.
  • Maintain the Specialized Technology Equipment Program (STEP), ensuring internal systems are updated, maintained and contract obligations are met
  • Ensure that the appropriate paperwork for invoicing of 3rd party funders and STEP program in an accurate and timely manner

Qualifications: (Education, Training, Experience):

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task in an organized manner
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to self-direct workload
  • Flexible, open to change, a team player and demonstrated ability to take initiative
  • Excellent customer service skills, sound judgement and proven diplomacy in dealing with staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Positive attitude focused on total agency success and commitment to maintaining confidentiality

Experience and Education:

  • Knowledge of assistive technology and daily living equipment and adaptive devices
  • Minimum two years customer service experience; experience in not-for-profit an asset
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft office programs willingness to quickly learn other software programs as required

Work Environment:

  • Service may be provided in CNIB centers, individual homes and/or the community
  • Willingness to travel as required
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Light lifting may be required (20 lbs.)
