Hogweed spreads across Canada raising concerns about blindness

14/07/2011

Toronto (Ontario) – This summer there have been several reports of hogweed spreading throughout Canada. Hogweed, a plant that’s originally native to Central Asia, is reported to cause eye damage and even blindness.

“The effects on the eye can only occur if one’s eye comes into contact directly with the sap from the plant,” says Dr. Keith Gordon, Vice President Research for CNIB. “Being in the vicinity of the plant should not cause any problems to the eye. However, if someone has concerns, they should contact their family doctor or Ophthalmologist.”
